SHIS FEBRUARY ACTIVITY

TEACHERS TRAINING PROGRAME (27FEBRUARY,2010)

Shalom Hills International School organized an intensive teacher training programme on teaching excellence for its staff on 27 February 2010. The CCE Advocacy programme was basically designed to train the staff and upgrade their knowledge about the latest evaluation techniques decided by the CBSE.

With the introduction of Comprehensive and Continuous system of Evaluation by the CBSE, all the schools are expected to implement it from session 2010-11. But Shalom Hills is already following the similar pattern in the primary section so it was easier for the teachers to understand. Formative and summative assessments as well as using tools and techniques of assessment in scholastic and co-scholastic skills were discussed in the programme.

The workshop, conducted with the help of Power point presentation, was highly interactive and all the participants took keen interest in the activities. By the end of the session everybody realized the fact that holistic education demands development of all aspects of individual’s personality including cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.

DENTAL CAMP ( 25 FEBRUARY, 2010)

Have a pearly smile…25/2

The Shalom team has always conducted workshops and interactive sessions with children regarding health issues and related topics. Prior knowledge concerning the wellbeing of a child proves beneficial. The children are prepared to face the world with confidence and courage. Time to time advice for the young minds transfers the teenagers into mature human beings.

Psychological as well as physical check ups are regular for Shalom students. In continuation to our promise of good health, the school organized a Dental Check up Camp from class I onwards in last week of February. A team of three distinguished doctors from Paras hospital visited the school for the dental health awareness. The children were also excited and eager to get the health check done. All of them geared themselves for the day – nicely brushed and rinsed their mouth.

The children were also given guidelines on ‘caring of teeth’ and ‘importance of brushing the teeth’. The check up was held under strict supervision of prominent doctors and Shalom teachers, with proper hygienic equipments.

As the children went class- wise, they maintained utmost decorum. The doctors were amazed to see the level of discipline and were all in praise for the school. To quote Dr. Mehha Goel, “We, from Paras Hospital Dental department, are conducting a camp in this school and have observed very well-behaved children. Their overall mental development and behaviour is worth appreciating. Hats off to all the teachers and staff.”

Keep smiling……. always.

TRIP TO NATIONAL SCIENCE MESEUM (20FEBRUARY,2010)

Tour and excursions form an integral part of Shalom Culture. In present scenario, education is not only confined to class based teaching but also to outdoor learning. Learning in open and natural environment makes understanding easier for the students. Keeping this in mind the school planned a visit to the Planetarium and National Science Museum in Delhi for classes VI-VIII. A group of around 50 students with 9 teachers visited the places. The trip scheduled on 20th Feb’10 was a grand success.

The show at the Planetarium was a unique experience for the students. They learnt a lot about various constellations and many hidden secrets of space were unveiled before them.

Next the children visited the National Science Museum. It was very informative and mesmerizing. They not only learnt many new things but also got an opportunity to explore and operate number of Tangible, Intangible and camouflage things.

Nehru Museum also left an impact on the young minds and helped them realize the efforts and life of the freedom fighters. In a nutshell, the trip proved highly informative and interesting for the students. So the fun-filled day trip ended with the children returning to School by 5 Pm.

            DELHI DARSHAN (20 FEBRUARY, 2010)

Accompanied by a full team of teachers on 20.02.10, all 125 children were unable to stop smiling with anticipation. In their favourite caps and sunglasses, the Shalomites wore fashionable yet smart look. The principal madam waved ‘Good Bye’ to the children when they boarded the school buses at 9:00 in the morning.

What fun without chips, chocolates and coke? The party began in the buses only.  Tummies full, they were now hungry with thrill in their eyes to see the actual monuments which they had only heard of in their EVS books.

The happy and energized group reached Quatab Minar.  The awesome beauty of the minar’s carvings left the little eyes wide open.  The proud Shalomites were amazed by the beauty but had their glowing eyes filled when they saw the other monuments almost in ruins. Everybody promised to take care of the country’s ancient and rich heritage.  They were concerned and reluctant by the writings on the trees, monuments and the walls.

Walking in proper queue through the garden, the Shalomites were given many compliments for their discipline.  “Ma’am, I wished and offered to help a foreigner. Because if we don’t respect them, they’ll not come to our country.” said well-groomed Kabir Oberoi of Class V smilingly. “We were being kind to them because of athithi devo bhav-we see in the advertisement” were the wondrous wordings of another Shalomite. They hopped and played, left the monument with a promise ‘we’ll come back soon’.

The next stoppage was Lodhi Garden where an additional excitement was the delicious tiffin sent by dear mama. The children sat in a circular way, ate and shared the food with peers.  The inbuilt picnic, playing in the fresh grass and having sun bath were a part of the visit to Lodhi’s Tomb. Talk about picnics, can the music be far away?  The teachers, children had gala time on the combined beats of guitar and tabla.

Passing through the Old Fort, the next on the touring agenda was none the less- India gate. Being Saturday, it was highly crowded.  The Shalomites formed a human chain, clicked all the possible angles of the famous monument.  Many were trying to read the names engrossed on the walls of the famous India Gate.  The patriotic Udai of Class V could not stop and saluted the monument.  The little and innocent mind gave a gesture of his true feelings for all those who serve their mother land. Along with the children, there was another person who welcomed them whole heartedly- the ice cream vendor who sold maximum of his stock.  What could be better when everybody smiles- with or without ice creams???

The Delhi Darshan trip could not be complete without a visit to Raj Gath.  The Shalomites paid tribute to the father of nation.  They stood still and prayed for the noble soul.  On explanation of Gandhi’s Samadhi, the young mind had a question- Gandhiji was of Hindu religion, then why was his samdhi built?  These questions proved that children won’t settle till given specified reasons for their queries.

All too soon, the trip came to an end.  The end of the trip saw a tired lot but packed with tales to tell for the months to come.
